First Ethiopian Israel Airforce Pilot: Lt. ‘Y’

(December 19, 2018 / KDJ) Due to the circumstances of anonymity and security with Israel’s military, navy and airforce units, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) candidate in question will be referred to as Lt. Y.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) fully employ Ethiopian Jews.  But it is only as of a very short time that more Ethiopians have joined the higher ranks.

Reasons for why this may include social issues in relations to discrimination and integration into the broader Israeli community.

For example, Dr. Avraham Yitzhak became the first Israeli of Ethiopian descent to become a doctor for the IDF.  As of 2016, Dr. Yitzhak became the first Ethiopian to acquire the rank of colonel in the IDF when he was promoted to chief medical officer of the military’s Southern Command.

Upon completion of his elite pilot’s course, today, and following his class’ graduation ceremony, Lt. Y will commence his service as an IAF fighter jet navigator and become the first ever pilot of Ethiopian heritage.

King David’s Journal wishes the young and brave pilot a safe and successful career.
