In the wake of a terror attack on one of Europe’s most famous Christmas markets, five people have been detained by French authorities as the hunt for the prime perpetrator continues.

Three people were killed and 13 wounded when Cherif Chekatta, a 29-year-old with a police record in France and Germany who had been flagged for extremism, opened fire at the Christmas market in Strasbourg.

Witnesses described hearing screams and watching people scramble as the city, which is home to the European Parliament and calls itself the “capital of Christmas,” came under fire.

Authorities have opened a terrorism investigation, but have not yet officially announced the suspicion.
